Service
IHS Synapsis started providing volunteering opportunities in the 2019-2020 school year by working with teachers across the district and developing curriculum which aligns with Common Core standards to help the community.
Our sixth-grade students focused on biology, using concepts and ideas they had previously learned, and build a capstone project: their own aquaponics farms. An aquaponics system utilizes tanks with fish and aquatic plants to cycle nutrients and clean water between the two. This system, powered by solar panels, allows for the clean growth of crops and serves as a model of systems of energy and cycles in nature.

Through a generous grant and teacher support, we were able to provide our students with the raw materials to help them build the farms to bring their designs to life. Along with that, in the 2020-21 school year, we created workshops targeted at middle school students to teach biomed and STEM.

In the 2021-2022 year, we expanded exponentially. We partnered with a branch of the Salvation Army to provide more hands-on instruction to underprivileged students. There, we performed experiments and taught students in grades 1st-8th about science-related topics. For more information, feel free to contact the VP of Service or the service coordinator.
